It’s a warm May afternoon in central Miyazaki, on the East coast of the Island of Kyushu, Japan. This Sunday, the covered market alleyways are almost deserted; the atmosphere is quiet as people seem to prefer the air-conditioned malls to the heat of the streets.

But on a side street, adults, teenagers and children are participating to a miniature auto race for Mini 4WD cars that seems to be organised by the local model shop around the corner. The cars are so fast that they are almost impossible to follow and most of the races end almost before they begin.

The image was shot in 2023 on medium format Kodak Portra 400 film using a Pentax 67 camera.

The negative was lovingly scanned by me and was printed on Giclée Hahnemüle Photorag paper.
